The oceans and seas of the world have received several centuries of close study, yet some areas of our own world remain mysterious and undocumented. We cannot be sure we know everything we share this world with.
Technology has come on in strides over the last century, yet we’ve only descended into the Mariana trench a handful of times to see what we could find. The endless possibilities of our deepest, most expansive oceans makes the familiar and beautiful seem strangely mundane: there’s a ‘been there, done that’ attitude to many more famous seas.
One area of the world’s oceans that has long been easily accessible is the Caribbean Sea. Take Antigua holidays 2012 and you’ll see this for yourself. It’s almost literally child’s play: you can snorkel you way along the shores.
The clarity of the water in the Caribbean aids studies immensely. It’s hardly the Mariana Trench down there! So it’s a surprise that researcher Carole Baldwin has discovered six new species of fish in Curacao’s waters.
Names like the ‘Banded Basslet’ ‘Sea Robin’ and ‘Goby’ aren’t exactly set to become household names, but the great range of sizes, shapes and colours they represent still make for an exciting new find. Skeptical that the ugly looking ‘deep sea toad fish’ is a new species? The researchers even took DNA from their finds.
To me, this find isn’t just about Science: it’s about the prejudices we bring to the Caribbean region nowadays. There is a lot more to discover in the Caribbean than we credit the region with, even if we’re not talking about stumbling upon new islands.
If we venture away from All-Inclusive Barbados Holidays, we may discover overlooked islands. Even away from the resorts on the better travelled islands, there are parts of towns and countryside you haven’t yet sampled.
There are also times of year to visit the Caribbean that slip the minds of most travellers. Festivals don’t just happen in the Northern Hemisphere’s summer! We have a nasty habit of seeing the Caribbean as one uniform area that’s this permanently laid back, invariable place. It’s time to change this attitude!
Steph plans to go on holiday this year with Kenwood Travel, who arrange Antigua Holidays 2012, and Holidays in Barbados 2012 in the UK market.

If you have fish tanks for sale that you take care of then it is highly probable that you know very well the importance of keeping the water environment good and suitable for the fishes that lives in because if you neglect it and leave it as it is for weeks or months then most of the aquatic animals would die and you will need to start all over again.
Do not forget that you’ll need to detach the power on each one of the device that is attached to the fish tanks for sale just like the filter as well as the water heater and be sure to remove the top cover as a way to get an easy access within and at this point, you will also need to take away the plant life and ornaments to prepare for the next action.
Of course, it is important that you use a gravel vacuum once you are free to do so, and you will need to keep it going until you manage to take away all the waste products that clings to the stones but remember to stop in case you have already taken away around half of the water from the tank.
In all probability the lining of the fish tank will contain many different algae and a few other comparable life forms and it’s very important that you make use of an algae cleaner in order to eliminate the vast majority of it from adhering unto the glass and just in case you also host several algae-eating fishes then it’s not bad to leave a few algae in some places.
Since you are almost done at this stage of cleaning the tank, it might be a good idea to bring back all the decors and plant life inside the tank and in addition, position the heater, filter and other accessories since it is very important that those devices were setup properly for the best performance.
Ultimately, be sure to refill the fish tanks for sale with the required amount of water and as soon as it was filled up to the recommended level, you may then switch on the water heater and the filtration system in order that it can perform its magic to the fish tank just as before and don’t forget to replace the top cover the moment you’re contented with the cleaning process.

Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid for humans because the the physiology of humans makes us incapable of manufacturing the fats. This means that we must supplement omega-3 fatty acids through our diet. Omega-3 fatty acids consist of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Both eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid are typically found in fatty fish, such as salmon. On the other hand, alpha-linolenic acid is most often found in plant sources, such as, flaxseed, walnuts, and soybeans. Because alpha-linolenic acid is derived from plant sources, such as flax, vegetarians often rely upon flax seed oil as a source of omega-3 fatty acids even though it does not contain any EPA or DHA. Humans are capable of converting ALA into EPA then, subsequently, into DHA, but this conversion process is altogether very inefficient. This is because the protein that turns alpha-linolenic acid into EPA is rate limiting, due to the fact that it also binds to omega-6 fats (thus, the problem is significantly worse if your diet is high in omega-6).
In fact, several scientific studies have demonstrated that this process is so terribly inefficient that only 5% of alpha-linolenic acid is transformed into EPA and only 0.5% of ALA finally makes it into docosahexaenoic acid. What this essentially means is that most vegans who think they are getting their necessary quantities of DHA and EPA from flax seed oil, are in fact deficient in both EPA and DHA omega-3.
Here’s where the really good news comes (for vegans). There’s another vegetarian or vegan source of omega-3, called microalgae, which has a very high content of both EPA and DHA omega-3. What is algal oil and why is it a good vegetarian source of omega-3 fatty acids? Microalgae are microscopic algae that grow in marine and freshwater. While fish oil is widely known for containing an unusually high content of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids, fish don’t actually create omega-3 themselves. Fish eat algae, which have a large amount of of omega-3 fatty acids, then store the EPA and DHA in their adipose, and this is the real reason why fish oil is high in omega-3 fatty acids. Microalgae are also a much more sustainable source of EPA and DHA relative to fish oil. This is because they have 5 times more biomass than even land plants and up to 40% of that is oil. Algal sources of omega-3 fatty acids are the future supply of omega-3 fats.
Algal oil that is abundant in docosahexaenoic acid is now available on the market, whereas, microalgal oil that is high in EPA is still limited. The best vegetarian (or vegan) supplements that have EPA come from the microalgae, Spirulina. DHA-microalgae oil is obviously superior source of DHA, when compared to flaxseed oil. This is because flaxseed derived alpha-linolenic acid has to go through two inefficient conversion steps to become DHA, whereas, algal derived DHA doesn’t have to go through any whatsoever. It’s also been proven that algal supplements are able to raise bloodstream levels of DHA and EPA. This is proven by one study where vegetarians (or vegans) with deficient levels of omega-3 fatty acids, supplemented with a single gram of algal daily for eight weeks, and significantly increased their levels of both DHA and EPA(Lipids 40 (8): 807-814). This is good, clear evidence that algal oil is an far better vegan source of omega-3 fatty acids.
It’s very well scientifically documented that docosahexaenoic acid taken from fish oil is indeed very good for the heart. Likewise, DHA derived from algae oil has the same heart benefits. For example, vegetarians that took 1 gram of microalgal docosahexaenoic acid daily for 8 weeks, were able to reduce their triglyceride levels by 23% (The British Journal of Nutrition 95 (4): 779-786). So there you have it, algae oil is a far better source of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid and has very similar health benefits as the omega-3 from fish oil! These statements and/or products have not been evaluated by the F.D.A. This information is not medical advice.

The first decision you must make when you buy an aquarium is whether you plan to keep freshwater fish or saltwater fish. This is a personal decision, however, you might want to go with fresh water fish.
Salt water fish is more costly and a bit harder to care for. You have to worry about the salinity of water, water conditioning and temperature. Because of this, freshwater fish are much easier to care for if you’re new to keeping tropical fish.
You will also need to keep these things in mind:
Where are you placing the aquarium? You need to keep your aquarium away from sunlight and from other sources of heat or cold air that could affect the temperature of the water.
And don’t forget that once you fill it with water, the aquarium is going to be heavy. As an example, a filled 20-gallon glass tank will weight about 225 pounds. Find the right location before the aquarium is filled or it will be impossible to move it afterwards.
Level floor
You will need a level floor for your aquarium, as this will reduce stress on the tank and reduce the chance of any cracks forming over time due to the floor being uneven.
The tank should be close to an electrical outlet.
Keep your tank near an outlet to have easy access to electricity for your lighting, heaters and pumps.
Make your tank easily accessible
Access to the tank should be easy, in order to properly manipulate heater controls and air valves. You also need to have room for a net, and room to move decorations around.
What shape should you select?
When you’re choosing the shape of your aquarium choose short, longer shapes over tall, thinner shapes. This way there will be more surface area at the top of the water, which is much better for your fish.
What size should the aquarium be?
It is best to choose an aquarium over 10 gallons. It is easier to take care of a fish living in a larger tank. Regardless of the type of aquarium, waste will build up in it. In a large tank these toxic materials have more room to be dispersed. This means the water stays cleaner for longer, and will require less cleaning than a smaller tank.
Material
Glass or acrylic are usually the materials used to manufacture aquariums. Either material will work find, however, it is recommended that beginners use glass. This is for several reasons – glass doesn’t scratch as easily, it only needs edge support and it costs less.
All of these tips must be kept in mind when you set up an aquarium. They are all important factors in your decision.

If you are ready to start an aquarium, you should take a moment to familiarize yourself with the nitrogen cycle. Many new aquarium owners jump into the hobby of fish keeping too quickly. The aquarium needs to be cycled before you add the fish. This process can be as short as 24 hours or as long as four weeks. Established aquariums contain bacteria that’s able to convert ammonia into nitrates, but since that bacteria is produced by fish, it is not contained in a new aquarium. If there are no existing fish, then there are no good bacteria.
Generally speaking, this is what happens during the nitrogen cycle. Fish eat food and generate waste. The waste, uneaten food and plant debris combine to create ammonia. Ammonia can harm the fish unless it is broken down. And this is where the nitrifying bacteria comes in handy. This bacteria, turns the ammonia into nitrites which are more tolerable to fish than ammonia. Another type of bacteria turns the nitrites into nitrates. The nitrates are collected and minimized by filters; however they will eventually accumulate in the tank. You will need to remove the nitrates through water changes.
You should prepare and run your aquarium before you add any fish to it. Clean the tank and the substrate with water. Don’t use any soap. Fill the tank with water that has been treated for chlorine and add filters and lights. Cycle the water until it is clear and until the right Ph and temperature are finally reached.
At this point you can buy the fish. Buy hardy fish such as danios, barb, gouramis, and live bearers. They are strong enough to sustain the higher nitrite levels in the aquarium. You should add no more than four fish at one time. Float the fish in the bag in the aquarium for about fifteen minutes before adding them to the tank. It will help get the fish used to the different water temperature. When adding the fish, be careful not to allow the water from the bag into the aquarium. It may be contaminated, or will at the very least, throw off the temperature and P.H. Give the fish a few hours to become used to its new home before you offer any food.
Only feed an amount that can be consumed in the first two to five minutes. Fish should not be overfed. Overfeeding will cause uneaten food to turn into ammonia. Since a new aquarium is void of nitrifying bacteria, this is vitally important. Monitor the Ph every day for a month. Watch the tank for cloudiness; if the aquarium becomes cloudy, it may be necessary to add a clarifier. Check the fish regularly for signs of stress or illness. A healthy fish moves and swim. Lethargic fish tend to remain toward the surface of the water. After about a week change approximately ten percent of the water and begin regular maintenance.

Many people love the look of BiOrb aquariums, but some people avoid them because they think that they are too much of a hassle to set up. There are many advantages to a BiOrb aquarium. The biggest advantage is that they are made of acrylic instead of glass which means that its more durable. The good news is that they are not that difficult to set up if you follow the instructions closely. Here is a guide to help you.
First, you will want to purchase a BiOrb acrylic tank. Make sure that it comes with everything that it is supposed to come with- including the air pump, filter and a light. It will also come with an instruction guide that will help you. There may be other items included, and these will be listed on the instruction guide or the box. Make sure that you have all included items before you get started with the actual set up process.
When you get ready to set up your BiOrb fish aquarium, you will first attach the air stone. This is one of the easiest steps to complete. You will then attach your filter to it and give it a small twist to lock it into place. This will make sure that it is firmly together for the next steps. Now that the main body of the aquarium is together all you will have to do is get everything set up for the addition of fish.
When you get ready to add rocks or plants to your aquarium, you will want to make sure you rinse them well. This will make sure they are free from contamination. You will also want to use some water treatment. This can be purchased at any place that carries pet supplies. Once the water is treated, add it to the aquarium. The treatment is important because untreated water will kill your fish after they have been in it for a while.
The last step in getting your BiOrb aquarium ready is to get the air tube connected to the pump. Once this is done, take the tube and move it to the place where it attaches to the tank lid and make sure it connects snugly. Place the light into the lid and put it on top of the aquarium. Once you have done this your job is complete. Now all you need is to add the fish you have chosen and you are set.

The first decision you must make when you buy an aquarium is whether you plan to keep freshwater fish or saltwater fish. It’s up to you whether you want to keep saltwater or freshwater, but if this is your first aquarium, you may want to start with a freshwater aquarium.
Salt water fish is more costly and a bit harder to care for. You have to worry about the salinity of water, water conditioning and temperature. Fresh water fish are much easier to care for.
There are other considerations that apply as well.
Where is the aquarium going to be? You need to keep your aquarium away from sunlight and from other sources of heat or cold air that could affect the temperature of the water.
And don’t forget that once you fill it with water, the aquarium is going to be heavy. Just to give you an idea, a filled 20-gallon glass tank weighs around 225 pounds. Because of this reason, you need to be sure of the location before you fill the tank with water.
Level floor
Pick a leveled floor to minimize the possibility of cracks developing in the tank from being on an uneven floor.
Electrical outlet
Keep your tank near an outlet to have easy access to electricity for your lighting, heaters and pumps.
Accessibility
Access to the tank should be easy, in order to properly manipulate heater controls and air valves. You should also be able to have enough space for a net and to move decorations.
Shape
When you’re choosing the shape of your aquarium choose short, longer shapes over tall, thinner shapes. This way there will be more surface area at the top of the water, which is much better for your fish.
Size
The aquarium should be at least ten gallons. Why? Because it’s just easier to take care of a fish in a larger tank than a smaller one. No matter what type of aquarium you choose, waste will build up in it with time. These materials tend to be diluted more in a larger tank. The water will be clean for longer and it will require less maintenance.
Material
Aquariums are typically made from glass or acrylic. Both materials are good, but glass is best for beginners. Glass is less expensive, it is less likely to scratch and only needs to be supported at the edges.
All of these tips must be kept in mind when you set up an aquarium. All of these factors are essential in making the right decision.
